This week we chat with Ms. Nichole

Where are you from?

Born and Raised in Saskatchewan, and consider Regina Beach my home

Where did you go to school?

I did my undergrad at Minot State University, but then did my masters at University of Texas at El Paso.

Why did you choose to work in the field of speech and language therapy?

I wanted to work with children and considered teaching.  My mom mentioned speech and language therapy, and luckily, I stumbled upon the field and fell in love.

What is your favorite part about being a speech language pathologist?

I love how diverse our field is, how I can work with children as young as a year or school age and up to adulthood.  I love that I can work with language, memory, social skills, and help individuals be successful in their lives whatever that may look like

What was a fulfilling moment in your career?

There are too many to recall.  But when kiddos say their name, or say I love you for the first time, that is always amazing for me.  I get invested and become emotionally attached to my clients.  So their successes always get me.

What do you love about Regina Speech Centre?

I love the team we have created, how each of our SLP’s bring an unique experience and expertise to the centre, and I love the community we have built around our centre.

What is something that you wish more people knew about our field?

I mostly wish people knew how diverse our field is.  We offer so much more than articulation therapy.  We can fit individuals with devices, we can help with concussion management, with feeding concerns, help with literacy and so much more!

What’s another profession you would be if not an SLP?

I truly feel like I have found the field I am meant for.  However, the more I get to work with Occupational Therapists the more I think I could have done that as well.

I also would have loved to open my own tea shop, make pastries, sell loose leaf tea and paintings.

What is your favorite book?

That’s a tough one; but it comes to three main titles.  1) To Kill a Mocking Bird 2) the Green Mile and 3) Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man

What are some of your hobbies?

I love the arts, painting, pottery, spinning, knitting and more.  I love being outside, love camping, and soaking up the sun at the beach.  I also have more recently started to love cooking and gardening.

What is one thing that you would like to learn how to do?

I would love to learn the guitar, and would love to master my knitting skills.

What is something people may not know about you?

I’m a pretty open book… so besides random trivial facts like I once was a Canadian ambassador with Canadian Girl Guides, or that I’m an avid reader and read a book per week, I am not sure.

Who inspires you?

My kids, my family, my friends … I get inspirations from many walks in life.

How do you like to spend holidays?

I love a mix between exploring and going on expeditions to relaxing by a beach.  Most of my holidays tend to be more action packed than “relaxing” though.
